Bird droppings
Can be thrown, used as fertilizer or compost, or made into prank food.
Obtaining
Birds leave stains after defecating. Right-click a stain with a brush to clean it and receive a random type of bird droppings, using 1 brush durability. Outside Creative mode, breaking a stain also drops a random type of droppings.
All four types share these uses. Their main differences are stain appearance and the chances of fertilizing crops or adding compost. Collecting a stain does not guarantee a particular type.
Four types of droppings
| Type | Fertilization chance | Composting |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | 60% | |
| 25% | 65% | |
| 30% | 70% | |
| 35% | 75% |
How to use
Charged throw
Aim into the air, hold right-click for at least 0.15 seconds, then release. A longer charge throws farther, reaching full charge after about 1 second. Each throw consumes 1 item, with a 0.5-second interval. Droppings disappear in water.
Hitting most mobs or players inflicts about 4 seconds of Slowness. Some mobs have special reactions. Hitting a suitable surface leaves a stain that can be cleaned and collected again.
Using a dispenser
Place droppings in a dispenser and trigger it with redstone. All four types can be fired. Each shot consumes 1 item and travels in the direction the dispenser faces.
Making prank food
Crafting prank food
In your inventory's 2×2 crafting grid or a crafting table, place 1 of any bird dropping and 1 food item or potion in any arrangement. The grid must contain only these two ingredients. The recipe produces 1 Prank Food. Already contaminated items cannot be processed again.
Hitting food on the ground
Drop food or a potion on the ground, then throw droppings at it. A direct hit or a nearby impact turns 1 item into prank food; it does not contaminate the whole stack at once.
The item keeps its original texture, but one character in its name changes. Eating or drinking it gives Nausea for 8 seconds, Hunger for 8 seconds, and Slowness for 3 seconds.

Already contaminated food or potions cannot be crafted again.
Contaminating cake
Place a cake on the ground, then hit it with thrown droppings. The cake is marked as contaminated. Players who eat it receive the negative effects of prank food.
An unplaced cake item cannot be crafted with droppings like bread can.
Fertilizer and compost
Fertilizing farmland
Hold droppings and right-click a farmland block to check crops in a 3×3 area centered on it. Each dropping type has a different chance of success, and the crop must also pass its own bone meal growth check.
Click the farmland, not the crop. Nothing is consumed if there are no eligible crops nearby. If an eligible crop is present, one item is consumed even if no growth occurs.
Adding to a composter
Hold droppings and right-click a composter. Each item has a type-specific chance of raising the compost level by one.
Mob reactions on impact
| Target | Reaction |
|---|---|
| Wolf | Brief Slowness and whimpering. Tamed wolves look at their owner. Nearby seagulls may mimic the sound. |
| Cat | Hisses, briefly speeds up, and moves away. |
| Fox | Is startled, with an additional 15% chance of dropping one item from its mouth. |
| Zombie | About 3.5 seconds of Slowness. |
| Skeleton variants | About 2 seconds of Slowness and 3.5 seconds of Weakness. |
| Spider | About 4 seconds of Slowness. |
| Enderman | Attempts to teleport and targets the thrower or a nearby player for attack. |
| Villager | When hit by a player, temporarily raises trade prices for about 3 minutes. Repeated hits increase the surcharge. |
| Iron golem | In Survival mode, hitting it 3 times within one minute causes it to retaliate. |
Triggering pressure plates
Hitting a pressure plate produces a redstone pulse lasting 1 second by default. The server configuration controls this feature and its duration.
