Outside Creative mode, digging moss blocks, podzol, rooted dirt, mud, grass blocks, dirt, coarse dirt, or mycelium with a shovel has a 20% chance to give 1 extra earthworm.
When mob spawning is enabled, rain may also bring live earthworms out of suitable soil near players. Right-click with an empty hand to catch one.
How to use
Right-click the top of a block to release a live earthworm. On suitable soil, it gradually burrows underground. Before that happens, you can right-click it with an empty hand to pick it up again.
Woodcocks seek out earthworms. Holding one can lure them, and you can feed it to them. Feeding does not tame woodcocks or make them breed.
