Look for it where flowers grow

Hummingbirds spawn in Flower Forests, Sunflower Plains, meadows and savannas. At least five flowers must be within 16 blocks of the spawn point. They hover at flowers or sugar-water baths by day, prefer canopies and branches between visits, and rest only in trees at night.

It has 4 health points. Slow down when approaching; do not chase or attack it.

Feed it five times with the same player

Right-click with honeycombs, sugar, poppies, red or pink tulips, rose bushes or peonies. The same player must make five valid feeds to tame it; feeding from another player starts the count again.

Companion commands and gardens

With both hands empty, the owner can sneak-right-click to cycle Free, Follow, Stay and Roost. Free mode moves between suitable flowers and sugar-water baths; Stay and Roost are for resting.

In Follow mode it hovers around the owner and changes position from time to time. When the owner stops, it may collect nearby nectar and can perch on the owner’s head when there is room. With both hands empty, sneak-right-click a safe patch of ground to place it and switch to Stay.

The owner can sneak-right-click the hummingbird while holding a flower to bind a nearby bath or the garden around its current position. Add flowers and sugar water, then let it roam freely.

Hovering, nectar and sugar water

A hummingbird can turn quickly, move sideways and fly backwards. It approaches a flower from the side, hovers with its bill at the center, then backs away without consuming the flower.

Add sugar to clean water in a bird bath to turn its current water level into sugar water. Each successful drink consumes one portion. Rain does not refill sugar water; empty, clean and refill a bath after it becomes dirty or spoils.

Help for nearby crops

Wild and tamed hummingbirds can provide short-lived pollination after a valid nectar visit, helping wheat, carrots, potatoes and beetroot within 8 blocks by default.

By default, each eligible crop gets an extra growth check every 20 seconds. Each effective hummingbird adds 25% probability, up to four birds. Server rules and permissions, including mob griefing, still apply.

Sleep, fright, Stay mode or leaving the active range stops the effect. Unloaded chunks do not run it and no offline output is added.

Occasionally brings back flowers

Hummingbirds can bring back vanilla flowers without being tamed. In Free mode they accumulate wait time, then may bring back a flower only after visiting one; the type matches the flower visited, and they do not create another while carrying an item.

It carries the flower to its bound bath or a nearby bath and drops it there. If no bath is reachable, it keeps carrying the flower until a collection point is available. The returned item is the matching vanilla flower.

Calls and wingbeats

Hummingbirds have five ambient calls. Calls play within 32 blocks and stop during sleep. The wing loop plays within 16 blocks, mixes up to four birds, and runs for about 4–5 seconds before a half-second pause.

Garden neighbors

Budgerigars sometimes watch or approach an active hummingbird; cockatiels only watch from where they are. Owner commands, feeding, sleep and escape behavior take priority.

Free-roaming hummingbirds may chase each other without dealing damage. Two males have a 20% chance by default; combinations containing a female have a 2% chance. Each opportunity has a 120-second cooldown and the chase lasts about 3–4 seconds.

A garden with flowers and actively feeding hummingbirds can raise local spawn weight for sparrows, long-tailed tits and mynas by up to 15% by default. Biome, server settings and population limits still apply.

Food list

Honeycomb, sugar, poppy, red tulip, pink tulip, rose bush and peony.

These are the food tags in the current local build. Items contaminated with bird droppings are not treated as normal food for feeding.
